Can you help me lose weight?
Question by dollfacedbaby1: Can you help me lose weight?
Okay, so here’s the thing. I started the new year wanting to lose weight. I am very over weight and have been almost all my life as are most of my mother’s side of the family. So a couple of weeks ago I went and bought a tread mill. I already had the excercise equipment “The Firm”. I also bought some Hoodia pills and I’ve been drinking green tea at work instead of water.
I have cut myself down to 1600-1800 calories a day and I walk at 2.0 miles per hour on my treadmill every other day and excercise for 1 hour to The Firm on the other days.
As stated before I have been doing this for two weeks and I have not lost any weight at all. Not one pound. I have not gained any, but I don’t understand why I have not lost any either.
I am doing everything that has been suggested by everyone I know. Does anyone have any ideas? I have heard of some people losing like 8 pounds the first week of a diet. How do they do it? I feel discouraged and feel if I could lose some I would feel better.

Those people on “The Biggest Loser” have the benefit of a entire daily schedule devoted to losing weight. For normal people who actually have jobs, etc. we can’t devote that much time or money. For us, the process is much slower.
You are taking the right approach of combining diet and exercise, but it’s going to take time. I don’t know if green tea is going to help you at all. I would just go with plain water instead.
I’m not familiar with “The Firm.” From what I could find on the internet, it might be a little more focused on body sculpting than you need right now. Instead, I would just stick with the walking (either outside or on the treadmill). Do it every day instead of every other day. You didn’t say how long you did it for. I would recommend at least 30 minutes–an hour if you have the time. I also don’t have a good feel for how fast 2 mph is for you. The real question is how hard your body is working. I usually listen to music while I am working out. If you can sing along, then you aren’t working hard enough. You should be able to talk in short sentences, but not comfortably. That’s kind of a rough idea. I included a link below to an about.com article about target heart rate and fat-burning that I thought was really good.
With regards to the number of calories you are eating, you didn’t tell us how many you were getting before. For example, if you cut down from 2000 to 1600-1800, then you aren’t going to lose weight that quickly (which isn’t necessarily bad–it might actually be better in the long run).
Anyway, don’t be discouraged. Lots of people lose weight quickly with starvation diets and such, but eventually gain it all back. Losing weight the right way is a slow process, but it pays off in the long run. If you burn more calories than you eat, you *will* lose weight–it’s a fundamental law of physics.

Cutting calories is good, but make sure you eat things without a lot of fat content. Something can be 100 calories, but have 10 grams of fat. I too have been dieting. The past three weeks I have lost 18 pounds. I drink only water everyday, between 60-80 ounces. I excercise everyday, whether its weights or running. The treadmill is good, but try increasing the mileage. I eat fruits for breakfast and vegetables for lunch. For dinner I have soup or something filling and healthy. Baked chicken is a great dinner food that is healthy. Just stick with it. Losing weight takes time. The first week you may lose 8 pounds, but then only 3 the next week, and then 3 the next week. The longer you stick with your regiment and maintain schedule, you will lose the weight faster. Hope this helps.
